How to Replace an replacement audi a4 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. Today, audi spare key replacement i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in the gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly if they're a Bosch model like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi etron key, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine is spinning. If the sensor fails, it will disrupt the performance of the transmission and the other audi car keys replacement's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This part is common across the audi key shell 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find good ones in wrecking yards.Subaru-logo.png
