Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents snuggle with their infant at night without fear of SIDS. However they are not suggested for use until 6 months, when your baby is required to be moved into a cot or a moses basket.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are smaller than. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However cots are generally used for children up to the age of three. If you're looking for a wooden cot, you'll find two sizes available both large and standard both of which can be converted into a cot bed/toddler mattress. If you'd like your child (or children) to be capable of sleeping in a larger cot, it's an excellent option to select the larger one.

MFM mum home tester Jasmine was pleased that this bedside cot was a little bigger than the Moses basket, but not too big for her baby's room. She says it's easy to lift her baby in and out for feeding or calming and that the quality is excellent when compared to other cots she's seen that are flimsy.

Another home tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also has an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable liner that is breathable. And it was shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. In contrast to International or European cot brands The Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy another mattress as your baby grows. It will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Here's the perfect mattress for your travel cot bedside.

Height

When choosing a bedside cot be sure to choose one that can be raised to a height that is comfortable for you when feeding baby. It should also be able to be lower to a level that is not in the way so you can raise your child towards you to feed them at night or soothe him. This feature is particularly useful if you're recovering from C-section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to the maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is the height you would like to set for the base of your travel cot bedside crib to be. While some moms find it easier to lift their children out of the standard Moses baskets at the lowest level, some mothers prefer a higher base to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular choice and one of our mum test subjects saying that it has an easy-to-use collapsible side that is easy to use at the push of a button.

Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device is only suitable when your baby is able to hold his head up without assistance, which is usually at around 6 months. This is due to the risk of suffocation. You should also be aware that when your child is old enough to be able to convert an existing bedside or bassinet into a cot, they must remove the sides when they are ready to do so. This will stop them from climbing out or falling out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of cribs for beds, ranging from simple to luxurious. The more luxurious options may include features such as an integrated night light or a soothing center which plays music and sounds and offers two levels of vibrating to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or even the swivelling base which allows you to easily get your baby's food in the right place. You may also find some models that can be converted to a cot bed or toddler bed (or both) ideal for when your child is ready to move to a larger bed.

For instance the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air which was awarded Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that lets you pick up your baby and move them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This is perfect for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean births, or those who need to remain in bed for extended periods. MFM mum home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, stating that it was simple to use and made her baby much more manageable - especially after her c-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Award in the category of Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and includes a machine-washable liner, reflux incline and rocking bedside crib feature. It's a bit larger than other cribs that we've tested but it folds flat into its bag for travel cot bedside crib, so it is relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mom home tester Leya loved the practicality of this bedside crib explaining how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. It is lightweight and easy to move. Its swivelling base is fantastic because it allows you to move the bassinet from side to side, and one of its sides can be let down to facilitate access especially for new mothers who are recovering from their c-sections,' she said.

Safety

A large bedside Cot [Idea.informer.Com]'s main safety feature is that it can easily be raised or lowered so parents can reach their child to feed or comfort them, or change his or his or her nappies. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from a c-section. Look for a design that lets you lower one side with the push of a button. This way, you can easily lift your baby up without getting out of bed. This is essential, especially when your baby grows and becomes more mobile. Do not add anything that may increase the risk of suffocation or injury, such as pillowcases and duvets which could cause your baby to become overheated.

The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product problems, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents) and consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC examined the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance they would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. However the CPSC found that these requirements would not be practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents in which infants were entrapped between a bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers that could be converted into other modes such as bassinets and play yards. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC add a second provision to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use which would permit them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. This attachment can be permanently fixed or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.

The CPSC is reviewing the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will be examining these comments when it decides on the final rule which is expected to be issued in the month of November 2021.uuoeebb-4-in-1-bedside-crib-bassinet-baby-crib-with-changing-table-baby-bassinet-with-wheels-travel-cot-with-mattress-included-five-level-height-adjustable-baby-cribs-for-newborn-black-1563.jpg
