They were required to complete the DCTs in their native language and complete the MQs in either their L1 or their L2. Then, they were invited to attend a RI where they were asked to think about their responses to the DCT situations.

The results showed that CLKs, on average, did not follow the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40 percent of their responses. They did this despite the fact that they were able to produce patterns that closely resembled native speakers. In addition, they were aware of their pragmatism. They attributed their resistance to learner-internal variables such as their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also mentioned external factors like relational affordances. They described, for example how their relationships with their professors allowed them to perform better in terms of the linguistic and cultural standards of their university.

The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures and penalties they could be subject to when their social norms were not followed. This will allow them to better know how different cultures could affect the practical behavior of L2 learners in the classroom and beyond.
