World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading

Item upgrading allows players to boost an item's gear score up to 700 and also add a final perk. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory and heading to the kiln.

Certain items can be upgraded to increase their stats (like perfect broken point armour that is rolled for melee PvP) and others, like weapons, do not vary greatly post upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Weapons can be upgraded to improve their numeric stats like crit chance, attack damage, PvE and PvP damage. Weapons come with a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. Additionally there are many weapons with a set bonus which is activated when three or more of the same weapon are equipped on a unit. In some instances, this bonus can add up to more than the amount of damage a weapon can sustain on its own.

The cost of upgrading a weapon depends on its rarity and current level. For instance, a +2 weapon will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while a +3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade the weapon will continue to increase until it is required to use a higher tier of Smithing Stones, at which the amount will be reset to one.

Upgrades to weapons can also change the stats of the base. While this is usually an excellent thing, it can have some negative consequences as well. For items that only see use in a certain build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs for instance) upgrading them could make them unusable unless you happen to have an extremely fortunate roll.

It is possible to upgrade armor items to improve their performance. This can boost the defense base of a chest or helm while belts and gloves will increase their required strength and agility. Armor has a rerolling option for its Enhanced Defense%. This means that it can sometimes reroll down to a lower value.

The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats it will gain after upgrading, as well as the relative value of those stats. This means that the weapon will gain 3% attack damage if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. The 3% does not mean that the weapon will hit 3 times less, as it is an absolute number.

Armor

It's also a good idea to save your armor upgrades for armor you'll wear at the end of the game, like the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield, or the helmet you'll wear to fight the final boss, the Monter Parts Merchant's mask.

You can also unlock some advantages to your armor by giving the jeweler in Gerudo Town 10 Twinkling Titanite. It is generally recommended to save these upgrades for the weapon that you'll use to beat the game. For instance the Longsword or Battleaxe. However, it's beneficial to have a few upgrades to the chest armor and helmets to let you sneak around some monsters.

Potions

Potions are substances in bottles that, when consumed, give the user an effect on their status for a short period of time. There are five types of potions, each with different effects and durations. Once the old Trinkets are no longer usable they can be upgraded. This allows players to increase their power and value over time. They can also be traded between players and are an attractive alternative to gold.

In general players should make upgrades to their most important items first. This usually refers to the most valuable-in-slot items for their class, then their secondaries and then other gear items that they won't replace in the near future (for example an earring or cloak). When choosing which items to upgrade players should be aware of their class's preferred statistics.
