Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an attempt to return to the classic sextet format and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. Its more punk-rock sound was indicative of the maturation of group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than previously recorded performances.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed just a few months later and the band embarked on an extensive world tour to promote the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history not to include one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities.
