Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our floor tests that test for bare floors, and they're particularly adept in removing pet hair. They do have some flaws however, which prevent them from being our first option. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's also prone to getting stuck on socks and shoes, and it couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people efficiently during our tests. Also, it doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of an area.

It's still a good deal, especially if your home or office has lots of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save some money. It's also quiet and works when you're at work or at school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on well and aren't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with self-emptying docks, however. If you're required to, the mopping pad can be replaced with an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.

It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after it vacuums this feature, which we've not seen on other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

The latest flagship model from iRobot is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a mix of modern sensors, including a restructured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and Robot hoover self-cleaning mops.

Like other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, offering an intuitive mobile app interface, Robot Hoover and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features to help you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine like Ecovacs' top-of-the-range X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically empty the vacuum's bin and fills up the water tank, and cleans and dries the mop pads.

The smart robot employs the combination of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and spot obstacles, and navigates more effectively than some of its premium competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vac works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home in accordance with the degree of dirt they tend to be.

For larger houses, it's worth opting for models that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a particular area of your home by using the app or via voice commands. If you have a lot of furniture, a stair-mode is also a good option. Finally the recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price would suggest. It has a great vacuuming performance and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad that uses an oscillating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other robot mop cleaners we've examined. It's also self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, set up a spot clean or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to improve performance. The app also grants access to many features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.
