Evolution Korea

South Korea's democratic system is prone to populist tendencies. It is still healthier than expected.

The country is looking for a new development paradigm. The Confucian culture, which stresses respect for the ancestors as well as gendered family relationships, continues to influence the society. There are signs of a secularist cultural trend forming.

Origins

In the early days the ancestors of the today's Koreans were capable of surviving by hunting and gathering wild foods. Around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate millet and beans as well as other crops. They also raised livestock, and also made furs. They created tribal states in Manchuria, and then on the Korean peninsula. They also developed a metallurgy industry, producing iron tools, including bronze. They traded with other states and introduced Celadon paper making, block printing art styles, and written language to Japan.

Gojoseon was established in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. The state adopted Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian philosophy. The state collected taxes from these people, and sometimes forced them to serve in the army or construct fortifications.

Onjo, a prince from Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong, the founder of Goguryeo established the state of Baekje at the end of the period. The new kingdom expanded its territory into the southwest of the peninsula, and was at war with Goguryeo and China's commandos in the region. The Korean peninsula has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Gojoseon was the first political state to be recognized during the first half of 1st millennium BCE. The peninsula was then ruled by a number of states during the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC-635 CE) which included Baekje and Goguryeo. The northern part of the peninsula was occupied for a time by the Balhae Kingdom which historians do not believe to be a real Korean state.

After the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states arose in the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Baekje, the most powerful of these states, was weakened by the fall of Goguryeo (676 CE), leaving it with only its southern regions in Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo, and the Gaya confederacy, flourished for a while.

The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms started to collaborate to expand their territories. Silla with the help of the Chinese, eventually conquered and united the peninsula in 935.

As Korea is entering the post-crisis phase the development paradigm of the country appears to be changing. Those who are horrified by the huge costs of the old systems are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of labor, capital and product markets. On the other hand, champions of the old system want to preserve it by leveraging nationalist sentiments and inflating fears of job loss.

Analysts and academics are divided on the extent to which Korea's development is being driven by these two trends. This article assesses the latest developments by analyzing five phases of Korea's political evolution including illiberal democracy (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72), authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and participatory democracy (2002 to present). This article also highlights the most important factors that appear to be shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the keynote speakers. This event attracted a large number of professors, church leaders and scientists.

The success of this event led to the creation of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st 1981. The event was widely covered in the national media, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR started publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In CREATION, the organization reported on its own activities and published articles on scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated slides and film strips from ICR and also some books on creationism which were published outside of Korea. One instance of an KACR success story took place at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, there were enough students interested in the idea of creationism that they raised the funds and support to put up a small museum on campus with creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

It has also sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also organized local branches that conduct seminars and provide talks to children in schools and other community groups.

Evolution in South Korea

In the latter half of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced with miniskirts and other foreign fashion elements. The economic crisis has formed Korea's new paradigm of development. The biggest challenge facing the new regime is to find an equilibrium between state-led and market-oriented economic policies. From that point on, the Korean peninsula was ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla gradually grew into powerful states on the peninsula and in Manchuria.
