The Band Toto Asia

This album starts off hard, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into you. The album also has some more mellow, jazzy tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and distorted AOR which could sound completely wrong but actually is very effective.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes took a turn towards the negative. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band had to go through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The band was able to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the traditional sextet style, and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloned on previous performances.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The studio album came out a few months later, and the band embarked on an extensive world tour in support of it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demos and tapes in search of an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the group.
