WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. A random extra substat is also added to every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as important for those with higher variance due to the need to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any kind of armor or weapons. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can be used to create the enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current it is recommended you visit the upgrader each several weeks.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item however, they are always less expensive than purchasing new gear. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item upgrader kit will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to improve the quality of weapons tools, armor, and other items. They can be bought by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for different currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased, it can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor with a button, which displays an item's preview at its next upgrade level when the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the item Level upgrade slot, and the current level of the item. For instance weapons cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currencies.

Item upgraders can be found in a variety of locations on the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade items discount and a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded. It can also be boosted by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only available through a variety means. This is both a benefit as well as an issue.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was modified a bit, and some new features added. After an upgrade has been completed to a certain item level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This applies even if the items are from a different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade items is reduced and the discount is available across all accounts. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade item is also reduced and is not available until players achieve certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

When upgrading gear in WoW players have a few choices. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are an important component of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

First, you should know that the crests can only be purchased for equipment with a certain rank. Each rank comes with distinct upgrade paths. The most basic and straightforward upgrade route costs 15 crests while the most complex may require as many as 20 crests based on the kind of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by working through tasks at the appropriate level. Using these new currencies isn't too complicated, but the system introduces some changes to the overall upgrade process. For instance, once an item reaches the highest upgrade level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their equipment to the highest ilvl possible for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests wisely, as they have only one purpose. For instance it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment you have, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you're planning to create. This is especially applicable to rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character, that will be able to avail the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
