How to Replace an audi smart key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions however the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor replacement key for audi coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good news is they are very cheap and readily available, especially when you're looking at a Bosch model, which is what ours are. You can also choose the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your audi replacement key service, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or audi keyfob slowly the audi car key replacement cost's engine is spinning. If this sensor fails, it will cause problems for the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost and then sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This is a typical component across the audi car keys replacement 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
